Assigment # 3 Thesis & Dissertation

1. What do the words thesis and dissertation, mean?

Thesis
:a statement or theory supported by arguments. eg: the author’s central thesis is that freedom is incompatible with equality. is a long written essay submited for higher university degree.

Dissertation:
a long essay on a particular subject especially for higher university degree.

2. What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation? The diference is that in

a thesis, you should demostrate and confirm by arguments(references) that somenthing could be diferent, and in a dissertation you can speak or write about a particualr subject. And both have the similar aspect to get a higer degree university

3. List 10 (ten) components of a thesis.

4. Define the following terms:


a. title page: I
t describes what your thesis is about.

b. abstract
: it’s a great importance, because it refers the problem,the solution and the impact of your “thesis topic”.

c. table of contents:
is a list of the parts of you thesis, organized in the order in which the parts appear and depends on the lenth of the work.

d. annotated bibliography:


A bibliography
is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "references" or "works cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).

An annotation
is a summary and/or evaluation.

Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following:
  • Summarize
  • Assess
  • Reflect

e. introduction:
is the first part of a book or speech, giving the general idea of what is to follow. it should be an overview of the contents of your thesis

f. materials and methods:
This section gives a detailed account of the procedure that was followed in completing the thesis discussed. a well written Materials and Methods section also serves as a set of instructions for anyone desiring to replicate the study in the future

g. results:
the effect or outcome somthing. A pleasant or succesful outcome.


5. What is a style guide?


is a set of standards for design and writing of documents.

6. What is an examining committee?

Is a group of persons that evaluate or asses your thesis

7. In Canada, how many pages is the average undergraduate thesis?

A typical undergraduate thesis might be forty pages. Masters theses are approximately one hundred pages. PhD theses are usually over two hundred pages. This may vary greatly by discipline

8. What are the 4 verdicts, you can receive on your thesis?

Accepted / pass with no corrections.
Revisions
Extensive revision required.
Inaceptable

9. What is a thesis committee?

is a committee that supervise your work, the progress may also act as the examining committee, or jury, at the oral examination of the thesis and Usually, at least one member of the committee must be a professor in a department that is different from that of the student.

10. Describe the process of submission of the thesis?

The process is when your thesis must be approved by the professor in charge and accepted by the other members of the student's committee. The final draft of the thesis should be prepared in strict accordance with the instructions given in the Style Guide for Thesis available at the Office of the Graduate School

11. Define the term, thesis statement.


  • tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
  • is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.directly answers the question asked of you.
  • A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
  • makes a claim that others might dispute.
  • is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader.
  • The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.




12. Now that you've answered these questions, do you feel that writing a thesis will be hell? Explain.


I think it would be a hard work to develop, but it can demostrate if we are prepared with a wide knowledge to defend of our subject , and we have to be organized,creative,give our best and dedicate many time to do a good work .
